You may not have ever thought of a Christian blog coach before. You’ve probably heard of business coaches and life coaches and even Christian coaches. But why a Christian blog coach?

What To Look For in a Christian Blog Coach

Well, on a sports team, the coach is the one who helps their team succeed. They look for areas of improvement for their players and work to ensure that the player’s strengths are being utilized in the best possible ways.

A blogging coach is similar. They help to assess your blog, identify your strengths and work with you to improve any areas that you can do better on.

But…and this is a big one…you don’t hire a peewee football coach for a professional football team and you don’t hire an unproven blogging coach when you are trying to scale your blog.

Blogging coaches seem to be popping up everywhere. When you look deeper into the coach (more on this in a bit), you should see strong numbers:  good traffic, a healthy email list and a profitable bottom line.

Hiring a blogging coach to help you try to get into Mediavine, who hasn’t herself had the success to apply, is not going to get you very far.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s just the way it is.

Christian Coaches Better Understand Christian Bloggers

Similarly, as you wouldn’t hire a baseball coach for a basketball team, you don’t want to hire a blogging coach who isn’t Christian if you have a Christian blog.

I am not saying that the coach is bad.  They may be fantastic at helping food bloggers, but do they truly understand the problems and solutions that a reader of a blog about Christian marriage or Bible study would have? No.

I know this from personal experience. I hired an amazing coach, spent thousands of dollars working with her. She is amazing! But she had no idea about the Christian niche and, therefore, was unable to help me get anywhere but broke.

She did not understand the problems that Christian women face. She didn’t know what certain words meant or the best hashtags for Christian social media. She just didn’t get it. Or me. Or my audience.

I learned that they only way to truly experience success was to a) always be a student myself and b) find a like-minded coach who truly understood my niche and my audience.

As a student of blogging and success, both my partner and I continually take courses and read books on the latest in all facets of digital marketing. We also read industry blogs and white papers and try things for some time before we teach them to others.

I did eventually find a Christian blog coach, who, ironically, is not doing coaching anymore. While we didn’t work together long, I did realize that I knew more than I thought and that having a coach who “gets it”, made all the difference in my perspective, planning and growth.

So What Exactly is a Christian Blog Coach?

A true blog coach is someone who has successfully built his or her own blog over time. Time is relative, and, to some degree, so is success, however, your blog coach should be able to, at minimum, teach you:

  • How to build an effective email list
  • To brainstorm together and help you launch digital products
  • How to grow your traffic through SEO and social media
  • How to identify activities that will provide the best ROI for YOUR efforts

If you are on the email list for a blogging coach but haven’t heard from them in weeks (or ever) and when you do they are just trying to sell you something, that coach is probably not the most effective blog teacher for you.

If the coach you are considering works mainly with food bloggers or business to business blogs, how can they truly understand you, a Christian blogger and your audience, perhaps Christian parents?

Sales pages can be slick. Heck, some are so good you are practically grabbing for your credit card before you get to the end of the page.

Before you hire a blogging coach, however, make sure that they:

  • Can prove their success (ask to see their Google Analytics, not just their pageviews but all their numbers, right down to even how much money they made from their blogging efforts over the past few years)
  • Understand your niche, or, preferably, specialize in your niche
  • Have been blogging more than a few months or a year
  • Continue to learn (ask them the last specialized course they took or training they received).

A good blogging coach will listen to what you are struggling with and they will study your website and blog. They will be able to point out quick wins and longer-term focus items to help you grow. You should feel you learned something in the first 5 minutes of your conversation.

Why You Need a Christian Blogging Coach

If you have struggled with growing your subscriber list or making money from your blog, you could use a blogging coach.

If friends and family tell you that your site/blog/course is amazing, yet it is not selling or your traffic is not growing, you could benefit from a blogging coach.

If you have been part of a group-coaching program and have not experienced the individualized training or the level of success you had hoped, you may need to work with a blogging coach.

A good professional blogging coach will be gentle but honest. They will, objectively identify and share areas that you may not realize are not helping you (or, even hurting you).

If you desire to blog full-time but are barely earning enough to cover blog expenses, you could certainly use a blog coach.

What Can a Christian Blog Coach Do For You?

If your blog coach has proven success, they will be able to pinpoint areas that you can improve on. You may even know of areas that you wish to work on for your own blog.

They can help your turn the dreams you have for your blog into realities by giving you solid advice and actionable plans in many different areas of your Christian blog.

Some areas a blogging coach can help you in include:

  • Traffic generation (and a plan to qualify for any target ad networks)
  • SEO (on-page, off-page, technical)
  • Opt-ins or freebies
  • Product creation
  • Pinterest including pin design, tribes and using a Pinterest scheduler
  • Realistic goal setting and planning
  • Site design and user experience
  • Affiliate program planning and success

Remember, though, if the prospective coach can’t prove their own success in the area you need help in or can’t demonstrate their deep understanding of your audience and what they are seeking, they are not the right coach for you. You don’t take guitar lessons from someone who plays the piano. You can’t get help with Pinterest for instance from someone with little success with Pinterest themselves!

4 Thoughts on “What to Look For in a Christian Blog Coach and Why You Need One”

    • Yes unfortunately you don’t know what you are getting until you get it with coaches. Even with good reviews it doesn’t mean they are the right fit for you specifically. That is one of the reasons we chat with people first. We want it to be a good fit on both sides! I am sure it is the same with virtual assistants!
